Friends of Bliss, 2010

This year our annual “Friends of Bliss” gathering was held on Thursday, October 28th at the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel. The Friends of Bliss was planned to immediately precede the OFCP annual conference held at the same hotel Oct. 29-31. Our “Friends of Bliss” meeting began with a very productive brainstorming session led by BCIC’s new President, Victor Gascon. Victor’s PATH (Planning Alternatives for Tomorrow with Hope) generated many wonderful ideas for fund raising for the year ahead.

Following a delicious buffet meal, Shirley McNaughton opened the evening, with the presentation of the Blissymbol for “foundation”,

Shirley reminded everyone that all those in the room had provided and continued to provide a foundation for all that is to come in the future. We then enjoyed Nancy Gibbon’s performance of “Take the Time”, our favourite song - with the music written by Nancy to accompany the words from two poems written by Kari Harrington, one of our first Bliss users (1971). We next remembered friends who have passed away and whom we all miss, and commemorated their memories with Nancy singing “Light A Candle”. She was accompanied on the piano by Shirley McNaughton.

Following the music, Sherly Thankappan presented the symbols that portrayed the theme for the day as we looked to the future - planning + tomorrow + hope.

Sherly then introduced the staff of BCIC - Cathy Nave, David Routledge and Christine Augustine. Sherly highlighted our support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy. We also heard from Kevin McNaughton who, on behalf of Peter Lindsay, re-capped the success we had with our first ever Blissymbolics Waterfront Wheelers Marathon, a walk-a-thon, as part of the annual Scotia Bank Marathon, held each September in downtown Toronto. We then had a demonstration by David Routledge on BCIC’s new software called, Bliss Ultra. Victor Gascon concluded our evening with his parting and encouraging words.

Thank you to everyone who attended the gathering and those of you who helped make our meeting a success. We want to say a special thank you to Bob Gibbons, who kindly videotaped our brainstorming session, for easy reference as the work begins toward resource development.

We now have copies on CD of the song “Take the Time”, sung by Nancy Gibbons - available for the low price of $10 for anyone interested in having their own personal copy. Send a message to cathy@blissymbolics.ca if you are interested in getting a copy.

BCIC Waterfront Wheelers Marathon Results Are In!!

The beginning of a long future together

It was a perfect fall day, the air was crisp, the sun was shining and thousands of walkers and runners banned together to participate in the Scotiabank Marathon on September 26th, 2010. BCIC was one of the teams participating in this year’s marathon as the “Waterfront Wheelers” to complete the 5K walk. The Bliss Team included Bliss Users, Alumni and Members of the Bliss Community; Joe Jessop, Elaine Drover, David Routledge, Sherly Thankappan, Peter Lindsay, along with many friends and family to cheer them on. The Bliss team walked to raise funds in support of the great work of BCIC and were able to raise close to $4,000!! Way to go Team!! We’re already gearing up for next year’s marathon and hoping you can join us next year and for many years to come.

Thank you to all our sponsors and supporters. We couldn’t have done it without you.
